Amarnath Yatra: A Sacred Journey to Lord Shiva's Abode

The Amarnath Yatra is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages in India, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees each year to a high-altitude cave shrine in the Kashmir Himalayas. Located at approximately 3,888 metres (12,756 feet) above sea level, the Amarnath Cave houses a naturally formed ice Shivalinga — believed to wax and wane with the moon. The Yatra typically opens in late June and concludes in August on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

Registration: How to Apply for the Yatra

Participation in the Amarnath Yatra requires mandatory registration through the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB). Here's how the process works:

  1. Visit the official SASB website (jksasb.nic.in) when registration opens (typically April–May).
  2. Fill in the online application with personal details and preferred yatra dates.
  3. Obtain a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) from a SASB-authorised medical institution — this is mandatory and certifies you are physically fit for high-altitude trekking.
  4. Pay the registration fee and download your Yatra Permit/e-slip.
  5. Carry the permit and CHC at all checkpoints throughout the journey.

Important: Registrations are time-slot based and are allocated in batches. Register early to secure your preferred dates.

The Two Main Routes

Route 1: Pahalgam (Traditional Route)

Starting from Nunwan Base Camp in Pahalgam, this is the longer, more traditional route and is considered easier on the body due to a gentler gradient.

  • Distance: Approximately 46 km (one way)
  • Duration: 4–5 days on foot
  • Key halts: Chandanwari → Sheshnag → Panchtarni → Holy Cave
  • Suitable for first-time yatris and older pilgrims

Route 2: Baltal (Shorter Route)

Starting from Baltal Base Camp near Sonamarg, this is a steep, more demanding route that can be completed in a single long day — though this is not recommended for those with limited trekking experience.

  • Distance: Approximately 14 km (one way)
  • Duration: 1–2 days
  • Steeper inclines; shorter but more physically strenuous
  • Popular with physically fit, experienced trekkers

Helicopter Services

For those unable to trek, helicopter services operate from both Pahalgam (Neelgrath helipad) and Baltal to Panchtarni, from where it is a short 6 km walk to the cave. Helicopter bookings are made through the official SASB portal and are in very high demand — book as early as possible.

Physical Preparation

The Yatra involves trekking at high altitude in cold, often unpredictable weather. Adequate preparation is essential:

  • Begin cardiovascular training (walking, jogging, cycling) at least 2–3 months before the Yatra
  • Practice walking on inclines and uneven terrain
  • Consult a doctor, especially if you have heart, blood pressure, or respiratory conditions
  • Acclimatise by spending 1–2 days in Srinagar or Pahalgam before beginning the trek

Packing Checklist

  • Warm, layered clothing (temperatures can drop below 0°C at night)
  • Waterproof jacket and trekking boots
  • Walking stick / trekking poles
  • Personal medications and first aid kit
  • High-energy snacks and sufficient water
  • Torch/headlamp and extra batteries
  • Copies of all documents (Yatra permit, CHC, ID proof)

Important Notes

Children under 13 years and adults over 75, as well as pregnant women, are not permitted on the Yatra as per SASB guidelines. Always follow the instructions of security personnel and SASB volunteers along the route. Medical camps and langar (free food) facilities are set up at regular intervals by various organisations.
