Bungus Valley: Where Kashmir's Wildness Still Reigns

While most travellers follow the well-worn path between Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, a small valley in the Kupwara district of North Kashmir quietly rivals all of them in sheer natural beauty. Bungus Valley — sometimes spelled Bangus — is a high-altitude alpine meadow sitting at roughly 3,000 metres above sea level, surrounded by dense fir and pine forests, snow-capped ridgelines, and crystal-clear streams. It sees only a fraction of the footfall of Kashmir's famous destinations, which is precisely what makes it so extraordinary.

Where Is Bungus Valley?

Bungus Valley is located approximately 90–100 km north of Srinagar, in the Kupwara district near the Line of Control. The nearest town is Handwara. The drive from Srinagar typically takes around 3–4 hours, passing through the towns of Sopore and Kupwara. The last stretch of road becomes rough and mountainous, adding to the sense of arriving somewhere genuinely remote.

Why Bungus Valley Is Special

  • Virtually no commercialisation — no cable cars, no souvenir stalls, no crowds
  • Vast, open meadows ideal for camping and nature walks
  • Rich wildlife including brown bears, leopards, musk deer, and numerous bird species
  • Pristine streams perfect for trout fishing
  • 360-degree views of the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges on clear days
  • A living pastoral culture — Gujjar and Bakarwal nomadic herders bring their flocks here in summer

Best Time to Visit Bungus Valley

The valley is accessible only during the warmer months. June to September is the ideal window. In June, the snow has largely melted and wildflowers blanket the meadows. July and August bring lush green grass and mild temperatures perfect for camping. The valley is completely snowbound from November through May and roads become impassable.

How to Get There

  1. From Srinagar, hire a private taxi (a 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended for the final stretch).
  2. Drive via Sopore → Handwara → Kupwara → Regipora → Bungus.
  3. The last 20–25 km involves rough mountain tracks — allow extra travel time.
  4. No public bus service operates directly to Bungus; private taxis are the only reliable option.

Where to Stay

Bungus Valley has very limited accommodation infrastructure — which is part of its charm. Options include:

  • Camping — the most popular option; bring your own tent or hire equipment in Srinagar beforehand
  • Forest Rest Houses — basic government rest houses that require prior booking through the J&K Forest Department
  • Homestays in nearby villages — a wonderful way to experience local Kashmiri hospitality

There are no luxury hotels or resorts in the valley. Pack accordingly — carry your food supplies, a warm sleeping bag, and sufficient water.

Things to Do in Bungus Valley

  • Trek to the ridge above the meadow for panoramic Himalayan views
  • Trout fishing in the valley's streams (check local regulations)
  • Bird watching — the area is rich with Himalayan bird species
  • Photography — wildflower fields, herder encampments, and mountain backdrops are endlessly photogenic
  • Simply sit by a stream and experience total mountain silence

Important Tips

  1. Carry a valid ID proof — there are military checkpoints in Kupwara district.
  2. Inform someone of your itinerary before heading into the valley.
  3. Mobile network coverage is very limited — download offline maps in advance.
  4. Respect the local environment — carry out all waste and leave no trace.
  5. If visiting in early June, check road conditions as snow may still block access.
